The Communication Strategist in the Large/Mega/Not-For-Profit market oversees the development, implementation and management of a participant communications strategy for Empower Retirement's clients. This client-facing role combines financial services acumen with strategic communications, product knowledge and client management to inform and motivate individuals to help improve retirement readiness. Partnering with other client-facing service team members, the role is responsible for delivering exceptional service to plan sponsors and ultimately ensuring client satisfaction while managing profitability with others in the service team. The Communication Strategist is responsible for accurate and timely communications relating to plan activity, as well as more strategic action-based campaigns.

 

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop annual goals and communications strategy. Manage implementation of participant communications to execute on the strategic communication plans, and other episodic communications required in support of plan activity or changes.
  • Understand communication product suite across various market segments and deploy effectively for clients based on annual strategy/goals. Modify templated action-focused and measureable communication campaigns (improved enrollment, deferral rate increase, portfolio diversification, etc.) based on client needs.
  • Review and recommend communication design and delivery strategies while managing a book of business. Will have ownership over participant communication budget, deliverables, quality control, timelines, metrics and planning.
  • Regularly attend and present new concepts or provide campaign updates during client and sales meetings, whether in person, via webcast or via phone. Explain complex concepts and build consensus with client contacts.
  • Anticipate industry regulatory communication requirements and ensure appropriate communications are leveraged for plan sponsors.
  • Engage Retirement Education Counselor Team to conduct employee meetings and select presentations/webcasts.
  • Complete the creative brief as required by Marketing to ensure full understanding of each initiative/tactic.
  • Understand the budget for each assigned client and execute appropriate initiatives in line with that budget.
  • Coordinate all workflow process to see deliverables through to completion.
  • Measure results and effectiveness of communications work and regularly provide updates to clients in addition to sharing best practices with peers/management.
  • May require occasional travel (up to 40%) to meet with clients.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, business, journalism, communications, finance or relevant field.
  • Retirement industry experience; typically a minimum of five years, including knowledge of defined contribution, defined benefit, non-qualified plans and financial services industry, including relevant regulatory compliance.
  • Retirement communications experience; typically a minimum of seven to ten years, including experience with required and discretionary communication deliverables. Specifically, familiarity with variable data, personalization and multi-channel delivery approaches to communications.
  • Client management experience; typically a minimum of three years, in corporate benefits, communications or marketing.
  • Advisor/Intermediary relationship experience and an understanding of their role, impact and the opportunity.
  • Familiarity with variable data, personalization and multi-channel delivery approaches to communications.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including presentation skills.
  • High competency in Microsoft Office Suite and aptitude to quickly learn other systems/software.
  • Experience with InCopy or InDesign.
  • Proven technical and persuasive writing skills and style guide knowledge.
  • Strong facilitation, negotiation and conflict management skills; ability to anticipate and overcome potential objections.
  • Adaptable to a fluid work environment and seasonal spikes in workload.
  • Resolves most questions and problems, and refers only the most complex issues to higher levels.
  • Role requires understanding of and adherence to communication budget and expense variables associated with client relationships. Internal: Relationship Manager, Marketing, Agency & Marketing Infrastructure, Operations, Legal & Compliance. External: Plan Sponsor, Advisor
