    The Director Financial Operations - Taxation provides leadership to the Financial Operations Tax Team within Empower Retirement. Manages daily activities and assists with more complex issues. Ensures all areas are in compliance with regulations and policies. Oversees and coordinates responses to various internal and regulatory audit requests. Oversees financial analysis and other related projects by being responsible for documentation, coordination and tax reconciliations.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Oversees daily operations of functional teams: analyzes results, adjusts and improves as needed, and assists with and provides guidance on more complex issues. Ensures that operational controls, policies and procedures are in place, are effective, and are compliant with company policies, Sarbanes-Oxley, SSAE and other regulatory agencies.
    • Participates in corporate and departmental strategic planning as it relates to new business initiatives, departmental objectives, systems upgrades, technology and planning for future growth. Evaluates current processes to identify inefficiencies, recommends and implements enhancements and improvements.
    • Establishes, assigns and manages departmental projects that have impact to department procedures, systems and services; ensures that staff resources are available and that project tasks are completed timely and accurately.
    • Performs required owner review of various reports and reconciliations per established Sarbanes-Oxley and SSAE control activities.
    • Coordinates and oversees timely response to large volume of audit requests and regulatory requests from IRS or other state agencies.
    • Trains, coaches and develops staff to meet business objectives.Makes hiring and other employment decisions and ensures that appropriate training is provided for effective integration of new staff. Conducts performance reviews, manages performance, and directs activities of direct reports.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    • Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance preferred; CPA preferred but not required
    • FINRA 6 and 26 registrations permitted, but not required. Corporate- established timelines apply to permitted registrations. FINRA fingerprinting required.
    • 10-15 years experience in Financial Services tax reporting and back-office management, tax reporting for various tax form types (1099R, 1041, 1042S, W-2) preferred
    • Demonstrated leadership skills
    • Self-motivated individual with strong organization skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight time constraints and inflexible regulatory deadlines.
    • Strong analytical/problem solving, written and verbal communication skills
    • Intermediate to Advanced MS Office skills including Excel, Experience with Taxport System preferred

    FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Manage operating costs, expenses, and staffing for team; participates in budget planning and drafts for specific departments/areas. Accountable for achievement of results within professional standards/measures such as service, quality, efficiency or financial.


    INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS: Works with IRS, auditors and other regulatory agencies Works with a wide audience, including senior management and frontline associates

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Full management responsibility for a team(s) of one or more managers and/or professionals, possibly across multiple disciplines or areas of focus and is responsible for the hiring of these positions, training and developing associates, distributing work, and performance management.
